Dubai's DWC airport expansion secures $3.5 bln UK backing at Dubai Airshow

The ambitious Al Maktoum International Airport expansion plans were given a fillip on the opening day of Dubai Airshow 2025 as UK Export Finance said it would provide $3.5 billion of support to the $35 billion mega-project, the first foreign investment in the DWC expansion and a strong signal of international confidence in Dubai’s aviation future.

Historic UK Investment in Al Maktoum Airport

An Expression of Interest letter worth $3.5 billion has been issued by UK Export Finance to support the involvement of British businesses in the expansion. UK Minister for Trade Sir Chris Bryant delivered the letter personally to Dubai aviation leaders, including Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman at Dubai Aviation City Corporation, and Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths.

The Minister underlined that Al Maktoum International Airport is a game-changer for global aviation and will create major opportunities for British suppliers to demonstrate their world-class capability in this transformational project.

DWC Expansion: Capacity and Timeline

The Al Maktoum Airport expansion will have the capacity to serve 150 million passengers annually by the early 2030s, with long-term capacity reaching 260 million travelers. Such unprecedented infrastructure development would make Dubai the world’s leading aviation hub and facilitate the diversification of the emirate’s economy while further cementing its position as a key international gateway.

Next-Generation Airport Technology

Advanced technology and sustainable design are the focus of the DWC expansion. Biometric processing systems, AI-based security screening, and intelligent sensors will guarantee smooth passenger flow within the terminal. The project focuses on modular construction and resilient infrastructure for long-term sustainability.

Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, the master developer, is committed to engineering-led delivery to an internationally recognized standard. The UK backing, according to CEO Suzanne Al Anani, reflects strong international confidence in the disciplined approach to the expansion.

Opportunities for International Collaboration

The UK investment opens up significant opportunities for British suppliers in construction, engineering, technology, and logistics. This partnership demonstrates the strong economic relationship between the UAE and the UK, introducing world-class expertise to Dubai’s aviation transformation.

Khalifa Al Zaffin underscored that the focus is on creating infrastructure to unleash the next phase of Dubai aviation growth, keeping the city at the heart of global connectivity.

Redefining the Future of Aviation

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths called the expansion a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink how airports should work and how the journey of the future should feel.” The project introduces new benchmarks into the aviation industry for passenger experience, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

By the time the project is well into the 2030s, Al Maktoum International Airport will be handling record numbers of passengers and creating world-class experiences that set new benchmarks for efficiency and innovation in global aviation.
