Emirates Airlines to Invest $12 Billion in DWC Airport, Sheikh Ahmed Announces

Emirates Airlines will invest up to $12 billion in its future home at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline and Group, announced at Dubai Airshow 2025. This massive investment underscores the airline’s commitment to supporting Dubai’s aviation transformation.

Emirates’ Major Investment in Al Maktoum Airport Infrastructure

The $12 billion investment will fund critical infrastructure, including catering facilities and aircraft hangars at the new DWC terminal. This substantial commitment comes as the $35 billion airport terminal is under construction, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2032.

Sheikh Ahmed emphasised the scale of the project, noting that the UK’s $3.5 billion funding announcement represents just “a drop in the ocean” compared to the overall investment required, but welcomed international governmental support in making Dubai’s aviation success possible.

DWC Airport Capacity and Timeline

The first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport will have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually by 2032. Once fully completed, the airport is designed to accommodate 260 million annual passengers, positioning it as the world’s largest aviation hub.

This expansion comes at a crucial time as Dubai International Airport, Emirates’ current home base, is expected to handle 95.3 million passengers by year-end and reach the 100 million mark within the next 18 months, according to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths.

International Support Strengthens DWC Project

The announcement followed UK Export Finance’s expression of interest for up to $3.5 billion in funding for DWC expansion. UKEF, Britain’s export credit agency, marked the first international expression of interest in the mega-project during a ceremony at Dubai Airshow.

Chris Bryant, UK Minister of Trade, stated that Al Maktoum International Airport will redefine global aviation’s future, creating significant opportunities for British suppliers to showcase their cutting-edge capabilities in this transformative project.

Strategic Partnership Between the UAE and the UK

The UAE and UK maintain a long-standing trade and economic partnership, with this project representing a major milestone in bilateral cooperation. The collaboration brings together British engineering expertise with Dubai’s vision for next-generation aviation infrastructure.

Khalifa Al Zaffin, executive chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, emphasised that the project is being delivered through a structured programme involving advanced engineering, resilient design, and long-term planning.

Dubai’s Aviation Future

Emirates’ $12 billion commitment demonstrates the airline’s confidence in Dubai’s aviation strategy and economic vision. As the world’s busiest international airport approaches capacity, the shift to Al Maktoum International represents a once-in-a-generation transformation that will cement Dubai’s position as the global aviation capital.

The project will create thousands of jobs, attract international investment, and establish new benchmarks for airport design, passenger experience, and operational efficiency in the aviation industry.
