Global philanthropy has crossed a defining threshold, with annual philanthropic flows now exceeding $1 trillion, more than triple the world’s combined humanitarian and development aid. And UAE leaders are calling for that capital to stop sitting in traditional charity and start fuelling the next wave of scientific and technological breakthroughs.

A Generational Turning Point

The message came out of a high-level webinar hosted by the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SPARK) on February 25, featuring H.E. Badr Jafar, Special Envoy of the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs for Business & Philanthropy, alongside H.E. Hussain Almahmoudi, CEO of SPARK.

Jafar described the current moment as a “generational turning point,” noting that up to $90 trillion in wealth is expected to transfer to the next generation globally, with over $1 trillion shifting in the Middle East alone.

The Gulf’s Giving Power

The numbers from the region are staggering. Islamic philanthropy is estimated at $400 billion to $1 trillion annually, with private giving from the Gulf at approximately $210 billion per year, larger than the GDP of most countries.

What’s changing isn’t the volume of giving, it’s the intent behind it. Donors are now demanding proof, scale, and sustainability, directing capital toward education, healthcare, technology, and climate solutions.

The UAE’s “Platform Mindset”

Jafar outlined the UAE’s distinctive approach: a “platform mindset” that integrates philanthropy with innovation, the same model behind the UAE’s success in renewable energy, space, and aviation. He identified three criteria global philanthropic institutions look for when deploying capital: clarity of purpose, credibility of governance, and connectivity of ecosystem.

For SPARK and the UAE at large, all three boxes are already checked.

The Bottom Line

The era of passive giving is over. The UAE is positioning itself as the global bridge between philanthropic capital and innovation ecosystems, where patient funding de-risks early-stage research and transforms ideas into real-world impact.
