How to Stay Alert and Avoid Online Scams

How to Stay Alert and Avoid Online Scams

Here are some practical tips to detect scam danger before it’s too late.

  1. Verify the Source

Before clicking any ad or link:

Check the official website of the airline, bank, or company

Google the name + “scam” or “complaints”

Read genuine customer reviews on trusted platforms

  1. Never Act in Urgency

Scammers often say things like “Only 2 spots left!” or “Offer expires in 1 hour!”
Always take your time to research before making any payment or commitment. Real investment firms or travel agencies never pressure you like that.

  1. Use Trusted Platforms

Book travel and make investments only through reputed platforms:

Airlines’ official websites

Government-approved travel agencies

SEBI-registered investment firms (in India/UAE)

Banks or apps regulated by the Central Bank of UAE

Avoid random pages, Telegram groups, or individuals claiming to be “agents” or “consultants” without proper identification.

  1. Look for Secure Payment Methods

Always pay through verified payment gateways or credit/debit cards—these offer some level of buyer protection.

Never:

-Transfer funds to personal bank accounts

-Use cryptocurrency without knowing the platform

S-end payment via Western Union etc. without confirmation

  1. Ask Questions

Before investing or booking anything, ask:

Can I see your business license?

Is your company listed with the relevant authority?

Do you offer customer support or refund policies?

If the answers are vague or defensive, it’s a red flag.

  1. Watch the Language

Most scam messages contain poor grammar, spelling errors, or over-promises. Watch for strange wording like:

“100% secured profits daily!”

“Buy now or cry later!”

“Personal guarantee by expert trader!”

Legitimate businesses use professional language and clear communication.

  1. Report Suspicious Activity

If you come across any suspicious deals:

Report the page/account to the platform (Instagram, Facebook, etc.)

File a complaint with local cybercrime authorities

Warn friends and family to avoid similar scams

Your one report could save many others from falling into the trap.
