With the Strait of Hormuz closed and regional shipping in crisis, two neighbours have quietly built a lifeline for global cargo.
Dubai Customs and Oman’s Directorate General of Customs have activated a temporary green corridor to facilitate diverted cargo shipments between Dubai and Omani ports via land routes, ensuring smooth trade flow, easing supply chain pressures, and enhancing regional cooperation.
The move is a direct response to one of the region’s most acute logistical crises. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, leaving most Arabian Gulf ports operational but unable to receive vessels, with port activity limited to on-ground container movements.
How it works
The corridor follows a multimodal model, with the Hatta–Al Wajajah border crossing serving as the primary land route connecting Dubai to Muscat. Once cargo arrives at Omani ports from anywhere in the world, it is customs-cleared under Omani regulations, sealed, and then transported by bonded trucks directly to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. The framework also covers certain air cargo shipments originally routed through Dubai airports but diverted through Oman.
What it means for businesses
The corridor also enables goods originating from Dubai to be exported through Omani ports, supporting regional trade flows in both directions. For logistics operators, this initiative comes at a crucial time as closures of maritime passages have severely disrupted traditional trade routes.
The bigger picture
Khor Fakkan, Sohar, and Jeddah are emerging as the three main alternative gateways into the upper Gulf as the region scrambles to reroute supply chains. The Oman–Dubai green corridor adds a critical land-based layer to that network, and signals that regional cooperation, not just infrastructure, will determine who weathers this crisis.
