Spanish tech innovator Deode is gearing up to disrupt the UAE’s mobile landscape with its ambitious “Free-for-Life” smartphone, branded as ‘de.free’. The device, designed to deliver lifetime access to calls, the internet, and apps, comes integrated into the hardware itself rather than traditional SIM cards or contracts.
Deode plans to secure bulk connectivity deals with local telecom providers and bake that cost into a one-time purchase, eliminating the need for recurring top-ups. This radically different model could make communication more affordable and accessible, particularly for expats and working-class residents.
Priced between €125 and €250, the ‘de.free’ smartphone comes pre-installed with social media, mobile wallet, and remittance apps. Deode is partnering with licensed UAE fintech companies to provide these services, aiming directly at varied end-user requirements.
Leading Deode is CEO Filipe Camejo, who intends to move to Dubai to lead local partnerships and regulatory engagement.
At the heart of this launch is a vision: to remove barriers and ensure that an inclusive digital environment is created. Production facilities in Spain, China, and Mexico mean that Deode isn’t any small player; it’s already valued at €337 million. For Deode, the product portfolio isn’t restricted to smartphones as it also develops tablets, smart kids’ devices, and AI-based gadgets.
In other words, Deode’s entry into the UAE market could mark a potential turning point away from traditional telecom models. By offering one device that combines connectivity and digital tools at a one-time cost, it’s betting on long-term value and accessibility. If the plan works, millions in the Emirates might soon see “free for life” connectivity.
