The UAE has successfully test-launched its first fully homegrown hybrid rocket, marking a pivotal milestone in the nation’s quest for sovereign space capabilities.
Historic Launch from Abu Dhabi
The Technology Innovation Institute’s sounding rocket lifted off at 12:21pm on Friday from a remote island off Abu Dhabi, reaching 3km altitude before deploying a parachute for safe recovery. The achievement demonstrates the UAE’s capability to independently design, build, test and launch advanced aerospace systems.
This marks the first time a hybrid rocket with fully UAE-designed, tested and operated propulsion system has flown, representing a shift from being merely a payload customer to developing upstream launch capabilities.
Two-and-a-Half Years in the Making
The project involved recruiting top talent, establishing comprehensive design roadmaps, conducting extensive simulations and rigorous ground testing. The engine, injectors, tanks, control systems and avionics were all designed, built and tested in the UAE by TII.
The rocket uses high-performance carbon-fiber materials for the main structure and fins, with a glass-fiber composite nose cone allowing radio and navigation signals to pass through. The hybrid propulsion system combines nitrous oxide and polyethylene propellant, considered safe and cost-effective for suborbital research missions.
Path to Independent Space Access
Dr Najwa Aaraj, TII’s CEO, called the launch a defining moment for UAE science and engineering, demonstrating leadership in breakthrough technologies beyond laboratories.
The achievement positions the UAE among a select group of nations developing indigenous launch platforms, supporting future ambitions including higher altitudes, heavier payloads and more complex missions.
