The Warning Is Official
The UAE Cybersecurity Council has warned of rising risks linked to remote working, noting that the shift has driven an increase in attacks targeting unsecured home routers — vulnerabilities that potentially expose the data of individuals, institutions, and businesses to breaches.
This is not a theoretical risk. Remote-work-related cyber incidents have risen by over 40% in recent years, reflecting a strategic shift by hackers toward exploiting home environments rather than hardened central systems.
The Numbers Behind the Threat
The scale of exposure is significant. Around 38% of modern cyberattacks now target infrastructure associated with remote work, including home devices and VPNs. Weak security measures in such systems can expose users to unauthorised access, interception of communications, and theft of sensitive data.
92% of experts believe the remote work model heightens the risk of breaches due to reliance on unsecured home networks and personal devices. Meanwhile, the UAE’s Cybersecurity Council head has highlighted between 90,000 and 200,000 daily breach attempts, many allegedly state-sponsored.
What Businesses and Employees Should Do
The UAE Cybersecurity Council’s recommendations are clear:
Update your antivirus software regularly. Outdated protection is an open door for attackers.
Use only secure, approved VPNs. Employees should use company-issued devices, follow strong password policies, and enable automatic logout after periods of inactivity.
Train your team. Employees should be encouraged to rely on official company communication channels and carefully review email addresses and message content for spelling errors or suspicious indicators — common signs of phishing attacks.
Report phishing immediately. Individual awareness and the prompt reporting of phishing attempts are essential to strengthening national cybersecurity and protecting sensitive digital systems.
The Bottom Line
Remote and hybrid work is here to stay — and so is the threat that comes with it. Cyber threats are no longer abstract risks. They are immediate, sophisticated, and capable of disrupting every layer of national life, from critical infrastructure to private enterprise and daily online habits.
For UAE businesses, the message is simple: your employees’ home routers are now part of your security perimeter. Treat them accordingly.
