German Carmaker Bets on Artificial Intelligence to Speed Up Development and Save Billions
Volkswagen has announced it will spend up to €1 billion ($1.2 billion) on artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030, aiming to bring the technology into every part of its business. The company says this move could help save as much as €4 billion by 2035.
The announcement came during the IAA auto show in Munich, Europe’s biggest car exhibition, where carmakers are racing to launch new electric vehicles and upgrade technology to compete with Chinese rivals.
Volkswagen plans to use AI in developing new cars, improving factory processes, and strengthening its IT systems. The carmaker believes AI will make creating new models and technologies much faster and more efficient.
Hauke Stars, Volkswagen’s chief IT executive, explained, “For us, AI is the key to greater speed, quality, and competitiveness—across the entire value chain, from vehicle development to production.”
The company is also going through big changes in its main markets, Germany and China, where it is cutting costs and working on fresh models. At the same Munich show, Volkswagen revealed a concept for a new small electric SUV called the ID.CROSS, part of its plan to make electric cars more affordable.
With AI at the core of its strategy, Volkswagen hopes to strengthen its position in the global auto industry while keeping up with rapid changes in technology and customer demand.
