The Most Important Diplomatic Tour of 2026 Has Begun

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has touched down in Abu Dhabi, kicking off what analysts are already calling one of the most consequential diplomatic missions of the year. A five-nation tour spanning the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy — running May 15 to 20 — this is not a routine state visit. This is India planting its flag on the world stage at a moment of profound global uncertainty.

Abu Dhabi First — And That Is No Accident

Modi’s opening stop is the UAE, where he met President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for high-level talks covering energy cooperation, trade expansion, investment, and regional stability. The choice to begin in Abu Dhabi speaks volumes. With Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupting global shipping routes and raising fears over crude supply, India’s bilateral energy relationship with the UAE has never been more critical. The UAE recently exited OPEC+, making direct energy cooperation with New Delhi even more strategically vital.

The UAE is currently India’s third-largest trade partner and its seventh-largest source of investment over the last 25 years, with over 4.5 million Indians living in the UAE. Their welfare, alongside energy security and trade, featured prominently in discussions.

UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy set the tone ahead of the visit, praising Modi as a “true treasure” for the Emirates’ leadership and people, and saying the bilateral relationship is poised to scale new heights in trade and technology.

A Six-Day Tour With Billion-Dollar Consequences

From Abu Dhabi, Modi moves through Europe with a packed agenda. In the Netherlands, discussions will centre on semiconductors, green hydrogen, defence and water management — a bilateral trade relationship worth $27.8 billion. Sweden brings AI, emerging technologies and the green transition to the table. Norway marks the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit in 43 years, with the 3Cin Oslo bringing together leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. Italy closes the tour, with focus on the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029.

Why This Matters Beyond Diplomacy

India’s exporters’ body FIEO described the tour as arriving at a “crucial juncture,” with high-level meetings expected to create new opportunities across engineering, clean energy, technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, logistics and digital trade.

This is India operating at full strategic capacity, securing energy supply chains in the Gulf while locking in technology and trade partnerships across Europe. For the UAE, having Modi begin his global tour here is a powerful endorsement of the relationship. For the region, it signals that India is not sitting on the sidelines of global realignment. It is driving it.
