Meta-owned WhatsApp has begun introducing a built-in translation feature designed to make cross-language conversations smoother for its global community of more than three billion users.
The new tool allows users to instantly translate incoming messages by simply long-pressing and selecting Translate. Users can choose the source and target languages and even download their preferences for quicker access in the future. The feature is supported across personal chats, group conversations, and channel updates.
Initially, the rollout is limited to a select number of languages. Android users can access translations in six languages—English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic—while iPhone users benefit from support for over 19 languages. On Android, users can also enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, ensuring all incoming messages are translated seamlessly.
Privacy remains a priority: WhatsApp confirmed that all translations are processed directly on users’ devices, ensuring that personal conversations remain inaccessible to the platform.
With this launch, WhatsApp aims to remove one of the most common communication barriers and help users connect more naturally across cultures and languages.
