The UAE has deepened its diplomatic and economic ties with the Netherlands following a high-level official visit that placed water security and energy transition at the centre of a forward-looking bilateral agenda.
A Visit Built Around Water, Energy, and Trade
H.E. Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, concluded an official visit to the Netherlands on 7–8 May, aimed at advancing strategic cooperation on energy, water, climate adaptation, and trade — with a particular focus on preparations for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, to be held in Abu Dhabi later this year.
Non-oil trade between the UAE and the Netherlands grew by 6.82 per cent in 2025 compared to 2024, underscoring the commercial momentum that underpins the strategic relationship.
MoU Signed, Energy Dialogue Held in Rotterdam
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, covering cooperation in education, training, research, innovation, and knowledge exchange ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference.
A high-level UAE–Netherlands Energy Dialogue was held in Rotterdam, bringing together senior representatives from government, industry, and academia to explore how evolving energy systems are reshaping global supply chains and economic competitiveness.
Building Resilience Across Water, Energy, and Food
H.E. Balalaa set the tone for the partnership’s ambition: “The next chapter of global resilience will not be written by those who wait for clarity, but those who build it. For the UAE, this is about designing resilience into systems that underpin our economies — ensuring they are connected, adaptive, and built to withstand a more complex global landscape.”
Discussions centred on translating commitments into practical solutions through strengthened partnerships, scaled investment, and greater private sector engagement, with water recognised as a critical economic resource and an enabler of sustainable development.
Eyes on Abu Dhabi: UNWC 2026 in December
UAE Ambassador Al Hefeiti stated, “UNWC 2026 in Abu Dhabi in December is an important milestone. I am pleased with the great interest from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in UNWC 2026, and we are looking forward to welcoming substantial Dutch engagement and high-level participation.”
The visit reinforces the UAE’s role as a global convener on sustainability — turning diplomatic momentum into concrete outcomes ahead of one of the year’s most significant multilateral gatherings
