Through its ambitious connectivity and technology roadmap, the UAE has also initiated a national 6G programme through the patronage of the Telecommunications And Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). It was announced at the very first meeting of a new “6G Committee” that draws in federal and regional authorities, the country’s telecom operators, universities, research centers, and global technology companies.
Deputy Director-General of the Telecommunications Sector at TDRA, Eng Mohammed Al Ramsi, said the UAE already has more than 23,000 5G sites serving over 10 million subscribers, with coverage of over 99.5 % of populated areas — strong foundations upon which the 6G era will be built.
Goals & Strategic Drivers
Several strategic goals underlie this initiative:
Gearing up for life beyond 5G: By formulating a roadmap for 6G, the UAE indicates that 5G is merely another stepping stone toward even more advanced connectivity paradigms.
Integrating digital infrastructure across industries: The project is not only about faster mobile broadband but also about embedding connectivity, intelligence, and the latest digital infrastructure in everyday sectors like education, health, logistics, energy, and government services. Al Ramsi said, “This is a strategic step toward building a sustainable knowledge-based economy founded on innovation, artificial intelligence, and integration of digital infrastructure across all sectors.”
Driving innovation, AI & Quantum Computing: The move emphasizes that 6G will be able to offer new capabilities enabled by AI, quantum computing, and satellite networks, further dissolving the boundaries between digital and cognitive worlds.
Co-ordinating research, standards & regulation: The national 6G committee will coordinate research programmes, standards development, spectrum planning and regulatory preparation. It also establishes subcommittees for “Research & Development” and “Integration & Strategic Partnerships”.
Future Aspects & Implications
The following are some interesting future implications of the release of 6G in the UAE:
New use-cases and services include ultra-low latency services, holographic communications, immersive metaverse environments, real-time digital twins of cities, advanced remote surgery, and autonomous systems like drones and vehicles in highly connected frameworks with the advent of 6G.
Global competitiveness: By being well ahead of the pack, the UAE is positioning itself as a regional and global leader in advanced technology infrastructure. This might attract investment, talent, and partnerships in the telecommunication, ICT, and digital economy sectors.
Infrastructure and regulatory evolution: Preparing for 6G means that spectrum planning, standards alignment, and regulatory frameworks will have to evolve in advance. The national committee has an important role to play.
Economic diversification: The 6G project aims to create a knowledge-based economy that fits into the UAE’s overall strategy of diversification away from traditional industries and toward high-value technology, innovation, and services industries.
Integration of satellite & terrestrial networks: Mention of satellite networks indicates that 6G plans are likely to go beyond just terrestrial mobile networks and may include non-terrestrial networks for ubiquitous connectivity and resilience.
Sustainability & Smart Cities: Advanced connectivity will underpin smart city infrastructure, IoT deployments, energy efficiency, and smarter transport systems that align with sustainability goals in relation to future urban planning in the UAE.
